Beijing official admits ‘gaps’ in readiness after deadly floods ravage northern China

After heavy rains killed more than 30 people and forced more than 80,000 residents around the Beijing area to evacuate, a senior city official on Thursday admitted there had been “gaps” in preparatory plans, including advance warnings for extreme weather-related crises.
